Farmers Take Note: Environmental Conservation Law under: 6 NYCRR Part 360 – SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITIES requires that tires used to weigh-down silage bunk covers (among other uses) be either cut in half or have a “sufficient number of holes drilled in them to prevent water retention”.

For 2018, the Cattaraugus County AFPB has selected Barbara Andera of Great Valley for the Ag Legacy Award. Barb, and her late husband Francis, operated Frangalex Farm in Great Valley for many years. This farm was a beautiful, well maintained dairy facility that was highly visible to anyone travelling down Route 219 between Ellicottville and Great Valley, and its picturesque and photogenic appearance showcased the pride they had in their operation, and also provided a very positive image of the agricultural industry in our county.
Jack Searles has been an advocate for agriculture in Cattaraugus County since he began his term in 2003 as the Cattaraugus County Administrator.
The Cattaraugus County Soil & Water Conservation District has selected Dustin Bliss of Bliss Dairy Company, LLC for the 2018 Conservation Farm of the Year Award. Mr. Bliss operates a dairy farm in the Town of Freedom.
Hill’s Valley Farm was founded in 1959 by Roland and Onalee Hill. They sold the farm to their son Richard, and his wife Donna, in 1979. Roland continued to help with field work for many years. Roland’s FFA project was a Brown Swiss heifer, which ultimately led to today’s current herd of Brown Swiss. He passed away in August, 2017 at the age of 85. Richard and Donna have been involved in the farm since 1979. They raised two sons. Derek is a high school math teacher in Hamburg. He and his wife, Michelle, have two young children, Mackenzie and Gavin.

Your agricultural operation, large or small, is important to U.S. agriculture. The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts a census of all agricultural operations every five years as well as other agricultural surveys. They need to know about all types of agricultural operations of all sizes.
Farm Credit East announced that it is currently taking applications for farm worker housing construction and improvement loans from the New York State Farm Worker Housing (FWH) Loan Program. These loans are available to New York agricultural producers, including fruit, vegetable and dairy operations. Agricultural producers may apply to borrow up to $100,000 per year for farm worker housing projects. An upfront, one-time fee is applied to cover administrative costs. There are no other fees or interest applied for the term of the loan.
